Obituary of Sigmund S. Roh
Sigmund Seungmoc Roh, husband of Joan Yangok Roh, passed from this life on April 17, 2024 at the age of 85 years old in Monterey, California. He had been a resident of San Juan Bautista, California, since 2012. Sigmund’s health declined from the effects of a progressive and incurable neurodegenerative disease (fronto-temporal dementia).
Sigmund was born on November 19, 1938 in Seoul, Korea. He was one of seven children. He graduated from Seoul National University in 1962 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He served in the Korean Air Force from 1962-1966. In 1966, he moved to the United States where he earned a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley.
In 1967, Sigmund married his fiancé, Joan Y. Lee. They later had two children: son Philip (who passed away in 1997) and daughter Audrey.
Over his career, Sigmund worked for Bechtel, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as well as the U.S. Department of State. Sigmund traveled extensively around the globe to many places including, Germany, Azerbaijan, Peru, Chile, Israel, Greece, Italy, Sweden, Kenya, Tanzania, and Armenia.
Sigmund enjoyed music very much, especially classical music and church choir hymns. He was also an avid golfer and hiker. People frequently mentioned that they admired Sigmund’s pleasant demeanor and kind heart.
He is survived by his wife Joan and daughter Audrey.
