Phil was a good man. A person you wanted in the foxhole with you when stuff was happening. Phil was one of my "go to guys" on the fireground. If he showed up as a Strike Team Leader, I know I could count on him and would give his ST a tough assignment because I could count on Phil to get the job done. He was one of my key Branch Directors when I was Operations Chief on IMT 7. If he wasn't there and I needed another solid hand I would put in a name request for Phil. He would show up, get the job done, and return home. The essence of the quiet, extremely competent, professional. I will cherish the memories.
His family should be proud of Phil's career, the many lives and much property he saved through his actions, his humbleness, the influence he had on young firefighters. He was a great example for our business. He will be missed, by the fire service family and his own. God bless, Phill. And god bless his family.

2 of my favorite Firemen. My son Brad and the kid who hung around my Santee Fire Station when he was 16 years old.

Phil, when he was 16 years old, spent all the time he could at my Fire Station on Carlton Hills Blvd. in Santee. Our crew really liked him and welcomed him into our Fire Family as he was such a respectful young man and his passion for being a Fireman was so obvious. I am so proud of Phil for the man and Fireman he became!
I introduced Phil to my family in those formative years and they thought a lot of him. My son grew up to be a Division Chief in San Diego County and had the honor of serving with Phil on several large incidents where Phil was part of the management team. It is a distinct honor to have known Phil and to have been a mentor. He has exceeded my every expectation.

I first met Phil when we learned the basics as Fire Explorers at Santee Fire Department in 1973. Later he served alongside me at San Marcos Fire Protection District in the early 1980's. I lost touch until we reconnected at a fire camp in San Diego County on a few fires he with CDF (CALFIRE) and me with BLM Fire a couple of times. I am stunned at his passing. The video tribute is fabulous. Phil, it was a pleasure knowing you. You did well. Love to his family and friends. Bless you.
