Obituary of George L. Mayer

George L. Mayer was born in Freiberg, Germany on January 13, 1956 to Leo K. Mayer and Elisabeth Schley Mayer. George enlisted in the military at Fort Hood, Texas on January 29, 1974 and was Honorably Discharged on January 20, 1980. George received a medal Good Conduct. He was also acknowledged as a certified translator, with Tannenbaum Translation Service of the German and English language. George moved to the Santa Cruz area after his military service where he worked in the construction field, building and remodeling homes. He enjoyed racing bicycles in addition to riding his motor scooter and beach cruiser along the Santa Cruz County coastline. He loved playing darts at The Over the Hill Gang and challenged anyone for a game of pool and would enter pool tournaments where he met his “best friend”, Diane Mesa. George and Diane moved to Mission Farm RV Park in San Juan Bautista. He enjoyed having camp fires with Diane and good friends, Lola and Mike. Neighbors passed by, stopped to share the day’s events, the happenings in San Juan and the current news. He faithfully watched Jeopardy and was good at answering the questions, he was also a great history buff and loved watching the History Channel. George was a New England Patriots and Boston Celtics fan and rooted on the San Francisco 49ers. He loved listening to the San Francisco Giants baseball on the radio and was a huge fan of NASCAR racing. He attended numerous races throughout the U.S. and shared his last live race with Diane in Las Vegas in March of 2013. George loved gardening and had planted a vegetable garden, growing chilies, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, corn, cilantro and various herbs. George is survived by his partner Diane Mesa and pet cat, Buddy. Nieces, Sarah and Georgiana Schley, Elisabeth Stansel and nephew Rolf Schley Jr. He is preceded in death by his parents and step brother, Rolf. Friends are invited to a military memorial service on April 1, 2017 at 11:00 AM, San Juan Bautista Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Mission Farm RV clubhouse, 400 San Juan-Hollister Rd, San Juan Bautista
