My brother, Steven, was my best friend and confidant. I remember when he was born and our parents brought him home. We were living in Oslo and it was just before we moved back to the States. I cried when I met him and I adored him from the very moment I saw him, even though I was only five years old. Every afternoon I helped my mother get him ready for his naps and I loved watching him as he grew up.
When we left Norway in 1969 and moved to Kansas, he experienced his first tornado! He was still pretty young then and I remember that he didn't cry (he never really was a crier) but took it all in and watched our lead. We were not nearly as collected as he was and we balked at going down into the storm cellar, instead sitting at the top of the stairs as we waiting for the tornado to pass and the all clear to sound. Our babysitter was beside herself! Our mother even more so - it was her first time away from us and she was at the drive-in with her friend trying to get home to us! She never left us with a babysitter again after that. Our big sister was our baby sitter from then on, although it wasn't until we were all several years older (sorry, Martha!)
When we moved overseas again to Belgium, Mom enrolled him in a Belgian children's school during the time we were there and he spoke French pretty well by the time we left in 1976. As the youngest of five kids, he followed along where ever we could take him! We were Gen Xers (ooo-rah!) and were outside most of the day looking after each other. He was a great sidekick as we climbed trees, swung off of tree branches and rolled down hills. We put centimes on railroad tracks to be flattened and marveled over, and chucked horse chestnuts over old monastery walls. He was a fast runner and so easy-going and quiet that we often forgot he was with us as we carried him along with us on our adventures!
We never lived in Germany, but we travelled there several times while we lived in Belgium to visit our Oma and Opa. He never got car sick like I did! He especially loved camping - our parents were enthusiastic about camping and travelling all over in every place we lived as we grew up. We have visited so many cathedrals and chateaus and national parks - the Ardennes Forest was a favorite place because we could swim in the river and run the rapids past our camp. He loved the water and was a great swimmer from the start. He also was an excellent runner and loved softball. His main squeeze as a teen was his first El Camino car and I remember the look on his face when he drove me to Salinas for the first time - sheer happiness!
Lastly, I want to remember when Steven first met Jolene. He called me the next morning and was so excited and so happy - it was love at first sight for him and he had always thought that he'd never meet someone to love. About six months earlier he had asked me what to do about never seeming to find someone and I told him to stop looking. To stop looking so that the one who was for him would know where to find him. And so he did, and so she did, and it was a perfect thing to hear him so happy and peaceful at last now that he had found his love! His daughters followed and he told me that he felt so lucky every time we talked.
I am so very grateful. Not just for having Steven in my life as my brother, but for his wife, Jolene. She is the rock we all relied on as Steven fought his fight with cancer. She drew on her strengths and plowed her way through the fear and anxiety for them both. I have never seen such a pure team as the both of them together and she was at the helm! My words here are not just to express my love and sorrow for the loss of Steven, but to celebrate the love and partnership he cherished with Jolene. I have no words to express completely how grateful I am for her.
Steven and I always knew that we were closer than most siblings. We talked about it at times and the only thing we could say and agree on was that we were heart-twins. We couldn't explain it, it was just there like forever and it was something we both relied on as we grew up and lived our lives. I will miss him every day I have left, but I will also remember his life on each of those days. He lived so well as he could and loved his family of girls with all of his being! Knowing that comforts me as much as our last words together. He loved us all. He lived the way he felt what was in his heart and it was evident all around him how much he valued that. Je l'aimerai toujours.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. I only got to know him through an online forum we've been posting to for 20 years or so. We've all been following his battle and cheering for all the victories along the way. He was a funny, warm and positive person and even though I've never been in the same room with him my life feels diminished by his passing.
