Dear Kelly & Rick- Thank you for taking care of Mary. She was one of my forever, dearest friends and colleagues. We worked together in the food industry from the early 1980's to the time of her retirement. While at Clorox we shared a special experience working with a group of women fondly referred to as those from the FCDC (Food Concept Development Center)-- Lorraine, Adrienne, Ruth, Gail, Vicki, Lori, Marilyn, Mary & Catherine. She taught me many tricks of the trade, how to deal with difficult people, and how to have a happy life. Mary was famous for saying, "If you don't want to be a doormat, don't lay down and let people walk on you!" She and I shared many an evening hashing out the goings-on at work. And, of course, we were best girlfriends at heart...we shared our love of our husbands, through the good, bad, and indifferent. She was with me through the birth and raising of my two children (now age 33 and 30). We traveled together around the U.S. to conferences, sharing rooms and many laughs. They were special mini vacations for us. One of my favorite memories was a night that Rudy & Mary, Neal and I went to see The Phantom of the Opera in San Francisco and stayed overnight at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. We had such fun planning the event and what to wear, where to eat etc. She was one of the finest people I have ever known. I will miss her terribly. I also know she will be forever at peace in the arms of her beloved, Rudy.
For those she left behind, she'd want us to just get on with it! Take care of yourselves in this difficult time.
Truly, Catherine Berry

Spending time with Mary was always a treat. It was so lovely to hear Mary speak of how she and her dear Rudy met at Letterman Hospital when he was one of her mother’s caregivers. Mary described how she had to fight with some of the Army doctors to get the care she wanted for her mother. Rudy supported Mary in
her quest and she succeeded in advocating for her mother. Mary never left Rudy’s side during his final hospital stay which was lengthy. Once again she was an advocate for care as she described his challenges.
Mary’s strength was so evident in how she handled the aftermath of losing Rudy and having to handle
everything, including house maintenance. She said
they went everywhere together so having to go alone
was especially difficult, but Mary rose to the
challenges.
It was lovely to see how many friends Mary had I her neighborhood, some she knew for decades. At her last Halloween, she bought little plastic pumpkins for the neighborhood children and filled with candy and each
got a crisp new dollar bill. This was so welcome as the children could not trick or treat because of Covid..
Mary and I spoke often and she would save notes about interesting things she learned and wanted to share. She was so caring and always wanted to be of help. No matter her problems, she always greeted me with a big smile and a happy voice. Mary and Rudy were so special to each other and to all they met. I was so fortunate to know them, even if briefly.
In sympathy,
Trish Tobias
