Mr. O was an icon of music education in Hollister for decades. He touched the lives of so many young people and inspired them to embrace the joys of creating music together. His passing is a great loss to us all.

Mr O wasn't just a music teacher he was a musical mentor this one hit home, most of my best memories as an adolescent were in his band class or at our band competitions. I remember having a head injury and could not participate in band and had to be home schooled for a while during this period of time I felt alone but Mr O and the Ostensin family made sure that I knew how much they appreciated me and how much the band appreciated me by sending me cards and this picture that everyone signed for me. This meant the world to me and lifted my spirits up I remember going back and being able to play again was the best feeling. My dearest condolences to the Ostenson family.

We are so sorry for your loss. As I said in my Facebook post, Joe was compassionate, kind, and patient. My family and I spent several hours Friday night watching videos from some of the band competitions my daughters participated in while performing for Joe. It brought back some great memories and also reminded me of some of Joe’s other qualities. Joe was a very caring and empathetic person, his interest in, and caring for each of his students was so evident. He really cared for every student. His dedication to his calling of service to others in the noble profession of teaching was incredible to see. His was a life well lived and he was a blessing to us. It was an honor to know him, Dominguez family.

Our condolences and hugs and prayers go to the Ostenson family. Joe was one of just a few people who made us feel welcome in our new home of Hollister, California, when we moved there in 2005 from Las Vegas. He helped our son, Alex, make new friends, and he was always a kind and calming presence whenever we saw him. In later years, our younger son Chris was a part of his summer band class, and my husband Don played in the Watsonville Band and the Pacific Brass Band with Joe, plus he was a member of Mr. O's Jazz Band.
We're unbelievably thankful that we had the opportunity to get to know Mr. O and to be a part of his world. Our lives are better and richer because of the time we were able to spend with him and his wonderful wife, Francie.
Love from Don, Julie, Alex and Chris Engelhardt

My condolences to the family of Mr. "O". Music was the very reason we choose to remain here in Hollister. My son who is now 18 showed his first interest in music at the age of 3. The schools where he was born did not have a music program. He entered into the music program as soon as he entered 4th grade, he remained in music until this very day. When Mr. O opened his academy, he took lessons in guitar, drums, and because of the music programs in school, has become devoted in playing the Marimba. I would have never thought that music would be my sons life long dream, to play and one day teach. I believe this is the very reason Mr. O dedicated his life to music, so that he would know others would share his life long passion, Thank you Mr. O.

Mr.O taught me for choir class almost 13 years ago, taught my older sisters music nearly 22 years ago and taught my mother and uncles music nearly 45+ years ago. He's always been an influence to us and I'm deeply saddened by his passing.

His music will always live on. Thank you for sharing him with so many of us. Whenever I hear "Country road, take me home", I always think of Mr. O and his talent teaching us on the guitar.
