I want to express my condolences to you, the Carota family for your loss. I met Mario, Estelle and family back in the early eighties when you lived on Prince Edward Island. My family met the Carota's through my uncle who was a professor at the University of Ottawa while Mario was teaching there. As a teenager in a traditional Scottish heritage home on PEI, exposure to different cultures and ways of living was almost non-existent. Mario and family enlightened me in so many ways and made a lasting impression on me.
Today I was reading an article and Louise Carota was mentioned in it. I had to look up the family as it has been many years since I had last heard of you folks. (The last being when my brothers went to Italy and met up with your family there.) I just wanted you to know that your dad's unconventional way of embracing life, his strong christian beliefs and his love of my mother's home made bread have been an indelible influence in my life. I certainly viewed you folks as dynamic and interesting, creative and boundless; quite a departure from my stoic Scottish upbringing.
Mario, may God's eternal rest be granted unto you.

Mario was easily among the greatest men in my experience. As Louis Stoekle of Madonna House put it he embodied fatherness. He had an uncanny faith that made things happen and not in the abstract. As another friend said of him when mario prayed God sat up and listened. His joyous nature and sense of humour covered a multitude of sins. He was my boss and my inspiration and my wife adored him. I could fill a book with Mario and Estelle stories and may yet do so. Rest in peace you have earned it.

Something told me that I should look up Mario and Estelle whom I have known since studying theology at Aptos as a Salesian and Mario living not far away on the 'Agnus Dei Farm'.
We kept in touch over the years. I visited him and Estelle at their P.E.I. home while I stayed at a friend's cottage on the ocean.
He dropped in one day at St. Patrick's Parish where I was pastor and had his photo equipment stolen, left unattended in his old Mercedes.
Lost track of him when he went to Mexico as he organized those cooperatives down there. He sent me a copy of his work at one point, which I still have with me.
Mario and Estelle, modern saints for me, not canonized by my Church, but I will do it in it's stead.
If all the Catholics that I have known over the years imitated their zeal, if not their efforts at following Christ wherever He led them, our world would be a better place and our Church would not be struggling to survive in a hostile world.

Mario Carota was larger than life to me. Big guy, big voice, BIG family. I used to be able to name all of the family, but now I would be guessing. The memories of Mario, Estelle, and all of the Carota's still exist and bring wonderment and awe of the stories, the life, the constant giving unselfishly to help others in need.
God Bless you Mario, join Estelle and my parents in heaven.
My condolences to the remaining Carota's. Mario may have left us, but our memories of him, and Estelle, remain and they can stay with us forever.

To Ben Carota and the entire family I send my condolences on the loss of your Dad, Mario. I have so many nice memories of your Dad and your family, especially visiting at your home in Aptos and "you" boys playing folk songs on guitar. Our Dad Wes outlived our Mom, Ramona, just as your Dad outlived your Mom, Estelle. It gives me comfort right now to picture them all together again, and picking up where they left off. Thinking of you all. Love, Maria (Warren) Damitz
