Obituary of Edgar S. Oerman

Edgar S. “Ed” Oerman, loving husband, father, and Pappy, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2016 at the age of 93 in Hollister, CA. Born in York, PA on November 29, 1923, Ed was the only child of the late Lewis E. and Ella Jane (Stevens) Oerman. He graduated from West York Area High School in 1941, after which he spent four years in the US Navy as a Machinist’s Mate First Class. After his military service, Ed returned to PA where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Muhlenberg College and began working at Atlas Powder Company, where he met his wife, Alice Clause Oerman. They were married in 1953 and shared 49 wonderful years together until her passing in 2002. Ed and Alice relocated to Hollister, CA in 1956, and worked as plant manager at Force Industries, settling into retirement after 30 years. Ed was considered a friend, a mentor, and a wise man by those who know him. With patience, humility, and a bit of humor, he instilled the values of hard work, integrity, and honesty in his family and friends. He was member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he was also a member of the original committee to start the church in 1986. He was also a long time member of the Santa Clara Valley Section of the American Chemical Society, a member of the American Welding Society, a clamper with the local ECV chapter, and served on the Boy Scout Council of Monterey. Proud of his German heritage, Ed enjoyed traveling Germany and Europe with his wife, and also enjoyed sports car races (especially driving his sons to Laguna Seca in the Porsche) and the occasional deep sea fishing trip. He was sharp as a tack, quick witted, and kept up with us until the very end- whether it be talking stocks, playing with his iPad, or counting how many drops of wine were left in the bottle with his grandkids. He will be deeply missed, but the family is comforted to know he and Alice are back together again. Ed is survived by his two sons, E. James “Jim” Oerman (Jill Oerman) of Hollister, and Steven L. Oerman (Mary Oerman) of Menifee, CA; his four grandchildren, Justin Azevedo (Jill Bagley-Azevedo), Stephanie Oerman Snyder (Joe Snyder), Christopher Oerman, and J. Michael Oerman; and one great grandchild with another on the way. Services will be planned after the New Year. Graveside services and inurnment will be held at a later date at Zion's Stone Church Cemetery in West Penn Township, Pennsylvania. Funeral arrangements and cremation are under the direction of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home and Crematory, Hollister. Contributions are preferred to Boy Scout Troop #434 and #436, and the VFW.
