Obituary of David Keith Young

A memorial service will be held at Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home in Hollister on Saturday, October 21 at 12 noon. David Keith Young, 70, of Hollister, California passed away on October 6th at his home surrounded by his family. Dave was born in La Jolla, California to Marilyn Ruth Lundine and Donald Keith Young on September 25, 1953. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1971. After high school, he worked as a ranch hand before going to work as a supervisor in the chemical application industry. He was employed by Western Farm Service for 20 years, where worked up and down the Salinas Valley. At age 38, he became a Paid Call Firefighter in addition to working for Western. During his time as a PCF, he served as Chairman of the Toys for Tots Organization. At age 48, he became a full-time firefighter for Hollister Fire Department. He was awarded "Firefighter of the Year" back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004. He was later promoted to Engineer where he rode out the rest of his career. He retired in 2019. Dave was born with the heart of a servant, and spent much of his time volunteering to serve his community with such organizations as Hollister Little League, Hollister Heat, Pop Warner, and Toys for Tots. He was an avid reader who especially loved to read historical nonfiction and survival stories. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hiking and bicycling. His grandchildren have many memories of playing with grandpa. At the fire station, he loved to give tours to visitors, especially groups from schools. He is survived by his wife, Janice, his children Dana Parra (Eddie Parra), Tracy Maiwald (Jon Maiwald), Trenton Young, and Cortney Young (Kathryn Young) and his nine grandchildren, Gracie, Christopher and Holly Parra, Lina and Matthew Maiwald, Eleanor and Royal Barnes-Young, and Chloe and Cody Young. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Musson (Steve), and his brother, Tom Young (Cyndy), a large extended family, and his brothers and sisters in the Hollister Fire Department and the greater public safety community of San Benito County. He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Marilyn Young. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to any organization to honor Dave's legacy. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Christina Gonzalez, the sisters and staff at New Bethany Residential Care, and VNA and Hospice for caring for him. The family is especially grateful to the entire Hollister Fire Department for loving Dave in life and caring for him after his passing.
