Tom and I met the McAbees' 53 years ago in late 1970. We spent many years together almost every weekend. Helen and Dick's friends became our friends spending Saturday night together then on Sunday we would be dancing at Casa de Fruta and barbecuing with Joe Zanger.
For several years Helen and I took our boys to the beach 3 times a week in the summer. We rented summer homes at Rio de Mar and Capitola. We bought travel trailers together and placed them at KOA in Watsonville for the summer which our boys loved and friends from Hollister would come over to visit us. We had many happy days together. Our next adventure was renting houseboats at Lake Shasta where the McAbees' eventually bought a houseboat . We also shared fun times with our speedboats at Lake Shasta.
We were on the New Years Committee at the Elks Club for several years and did 15 consecutive years going to Tahoe or Reno on the Exchange Club bus trip.
Richard spent many weekends and weeks with us and we thought of him as our third son. We loved Richard as our boys always got along and had fun together. Helen and Dick felt the same about our boys. We also enjoyed being with the four girls and being part of their lives as they grew-up, married and had families.
Helen and I still celebrated each others birthdays and friendship. We always had many memories to re-live. I will miss her fun personality and zest for life She was a special person and friend to Tom and me and our family. We will always cherish our time together . We love you Helen.

I have so many memories, where do I begin? First on Line Street visiting Patti when we were young kids and Mrs. McAbee was in the kitchen baking or canning. I loved being at Patti’s house. I remember there was so much going on, thanks to Patti’s Mom. I always felt welcomed in their home.
My second memory is of the two Helen’s, McAbee and Ostoja at our family home on Fifth Street with my Mother, Catherine. I was playing bartender during happy hour one Summer Day. I introduced “The Croatian Girls” to an Aperol Spritzer, they liked it along with their cheese, “pršut” and bread of course!
Helen always had fun at Mother’s Epiphany parties on January 6 as we all did. I have a wonderful photo of Helen with my Mother, I will include. I love you both and Helen O!

Oh, Helen could always make me laugh. I've had the pleasure of knowing her my entire life but really got to know her during my 18 years of being the Department Chair at the County Fair. Helen and Dick would come in with boxes and boxes of her jams, jellies, and other canned goods entries. They were amazing. Sending so many prayers to all of you, your Mom was a special person and enjoyed life.

Usually the last to arrive, and the last to leave any family function, Auntie Helen was the life of the party. She welcomed my sister and me to the family home for summer get-togethers with cousin Patti. I loved the vibrancy and fun in the home she created. Many years later I had the most amazing time with her in a bar at Chico State, where again she was among the last to leave. I can only hope that I will leave such a lasting impression on my family and friends. What a beautiful soul, what a full life. She will be missed dearly, but the memories will last a lifetime. Sending my love to all my cousins.

Richard, Lynda, Janis, Cathy and Patti. My deepest condolences to you and your families in the loss of your beautiful mother Helen. As neighbors on Line Street for many years it was always wonderful to see Helen’s beautiful decorated Christmas tree with the many ornaments that she collected for years. Her flowers and canned goods at the Fair were always great to see. After school cookies were always a big hit with my boys. Helen gave so much to her community and loved every bit of it. She will truly be missed by all. God Bless your family during this difficult time.
