Obituary of Michael Scott Hayes
Michael Scott Hayes, 56, passed away at his home in Hollister, CA, with his family by his side after a valiant battle with cancer.
He was born July 22, 1960 in Erie, son of John J. and Carmella (Musone) Hayes. He was a 1978 graduate of Academy High School and later studied at Edinboro University as an Education Major and later earning a Master’s Degree from Concordia University. He served 10 years in the U.S. Navy as an In Flight Avionics Maintenance Technician, aboard the USN P-3C Orion (Sub hunter), stationed at Moffett Field, Mountain View, CA. Mike was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with one star for his deployment with the USS Carl Vinson (CVN -70). He spent several years working for Autoclave Engineers/Snap-Tite as a technician where he traveled the world. He spent the past five years as a high school science teacher in Salinas, CA. Over the years he enjoyed fishing and hunting with family and friends. He loved coaching his boys in football and served as an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 210 in Conneautville, Pa. where he earned the nickname of “Grey Chicken”. He had a love for science and would teach anyone who wanted to learn. His most recent passion in life was riding and working with horses.
He was preceded in death by his father, John J. Hayes, a brother, Ronald Hayes andMike’s maternal grandmother, Carrie Musone. Mike will be greatly missed by his family, which include his wife of 34 years, Catherine (Smith) Hayes; two sons, John J. Hayes and Dakota F. Hayes (Dusty); one grandson, Hayden F. Hayes; his mother, Carmella (Musone) Hayes; a brother, Patrick Hayes (Barbara); a sister in law, Sandy Hayes; several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins, including Kim Kaufmann (Rick).
Friends may call on Friday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Edder Funeral Home, Inc., 309 Main St. East, Girard, PA and are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Saturday at 10AM at St. George Catholic Church, 5145 Peach St., Erie, PA 16509, with Military honors to follow.
