Dear Coates Family,
I've known Bill for my entire career with UC Cooperative Extension. He was a first class extension educator, problem-solver, and dedicated to the people he served. He made California a better place as a result of his work. I am so sorry for your loss.

Nancy,
So hard to hear of Bills passing. We had some great times in the early years of our marriges. Glad to hear that Hawaii was still a favorite vacation spot for Bill, as we got to enjoyed a trip to that special place with you both. Understand that this has to be a hard time, but keep the memories of his passions.

I'm going to miss Bill's yearly visits out to my walnut orchard, and in such a nice way telling me what I was doing wrong---over and over again.
When you look back on your life there are a few that just seem to stand out; and Bill was one of those for me.

I am so sorry to hear about Bill, and my thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time.
Bill was a wonderful, selfless man who was always willing to help me with whatever he could. Year after year he would come to help me judge science fair projects at Rancho Middle School where I teach science. Many times he stayed very late to help get them all judged in years where not many came to help. He made a standing offer to come and guest speak in my classroom about horticulture and the scientific method, and I regret that I did not take him up on his offer to help spread his love of science and horticulture to my students.
Nancy, you were nice (and brave) enough to sub for me and deal with my "hooligans" in the classroom several times. I was lucky enough to teach Ryan, Ashley and Darren science as they went through Rancho, and I honestly cannot think of any nicer, brighter, or more dedicated students that I have had over the years.
Nancy, Ryan, Ashley and Darren, I know it is a hard time. Remember the good times, and the wonderful man we will all miss enormously.
