Grace was born Grace Mabel Wood, June 27, 1920 in Bridgewater, Mass. to parents Lester William Wood and Viola Peters Wood. She spent her childhood and teenage years in the beautiful Cape Cod area which she loved dearly. As an adventurous teenager she took flying lessons and proudly kept her flight log book for all these years. She then moved to Boston to pursue a career in nursing, where she met her future husband, navy officer, Frank Bishop. They married in Natick, Mass. in 1942.
She spent the war years in Mass. where her eldest son was born. At the end of the war she joined Frank in San Francisco , where he was stationed, living there 2 years. then followed him to Bremerhaven, Germany for another 2 years while he worked in Naval Intelligence. She then moved to Hanford, California where her second son and daughter were born before moving to Hollister in 1957.
Once in Hollister, she started working at the old Hazel Hawkins Hospital in the Obstetrics Department and retired after 26 years of service. Upon retirement a friend and fellow worker wrote this about her:
"Grace likes Dalmations and shopping sprees, Mayflower study and new car keys. In addition, Grace likes horses...and one fine day she took a flip and broke her femur tip and ambulated in for care! Grace is truley kind and fair. She has had her fair share of joy and sorrow this we know. We marvel at her strength and glow, it is seeds of goodness she does sow."
Grace belonged to the Society of Mayflower descendants, Soule Kindred of America, Daughters of the American Revolution ,The Alden Kindred and the National Society of the Daughters of the Union 1861-1865.
