Fourth generation San Benito County farmer Philip Charles Herbert died on March 4, 2022. He was born on November 15, 1941 at Providence Hospital in Oakland, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip Vincent Herbert and Rosemary McNamee Herbert. At the beginning of the Vietnam War he served in the US Naval Reserves on the USS Kersarge in the Pacific Ocean. Upon returning to California he received his B.S. in agriculture at Fresno State college. Although Philip had a wide variety of interests he particularly loved traveling, following the investments market, hiking and bicycling. He bicycled l00's of miles each week into his seventies and made 3 roundtrips across the USA and Canada. He was an avid member of a hiking group who made quarterly day treks into all corners of Northern California and a yearly 2 week camping trip to the Sierra Nevada mountains each August. His survivors include his siblings, Sarah Herbert, Pat Herbert, Kitty Herbert, all of Hollister and Joe Herbert of Sacramento. Also survived by his daughter, Liz Barnett of Eugene, Oregon, and sons, Phil Herbert of Portland, Oregon, Ned Herbert of Port Townsend, Washington and Mike Herbert of North Bend, Oregon. His grandchildren are Thomas Arballo, Anthony Barnett, Mason Herbert Suda, Joseph Herbert and Jackson Herbert all of Oregon. He is also survived by numerous nieces and cousins. At the request of the family, services will be private.
