I met Marcelino through my husband, Manuel. The 2 of them got together a few years back because of their love of old cars, trucks and motorcycles . Mars visited whenever he had time. Sometimes he’d stop by quickly to give Manuel news on an old vehicle he was on his way to check on, or an upcoming swap meet, or just to see how Manuel was doing. And sometimes he’d arrive in the late morning and the two of them would spend a day traipsing around the place, going in and out of the scrap yard looking for car parts, or standing or sitting around talking until the sun was going down. And when our oranges, limes, lemons and nuts were in season, Mars always made sure to pick bagsful to take home. The times he’d stay for dinner were the times I got to hear his stories about his life. He talked about McAllen and Harlingen, Texas. He also told me about growing up at the old house on Monterey Road at Church St. in San Martin. He pointed out to me that the “tank” that was connected to that house is still standing. And as I pass through there on my way home from work, yes, I do see that tank, and then I think about him. In that stomping ground, I learned of the families and kids he ran around with: the Guzmans, the Matuks, the Gonzales family… and what a small world, I found out I now I work with some of those kids, who are now men, from those families.
When he first started coming over, once in a while, he’d bring his little granddaughter with him. I can’t recall her name (Brianna? Brittany?) But she must probably be in High School, now. Lately, one of his activities was bike riding with the grandkids. He really enjoyed that. Sometimes he spoke of his daughter who works at The Apricot King, and it was a treat for us when he brought us a package of those chocolate covered apricots. And he was so proud when he told us that his son bought a house. I recall the only times I saw Mars feelings sad were when he told us of his Dad’s passing, and then again . . . when his Mom passed.
Mars was ready to lend a hand when needed. Here he is helping Manuel install a microwave over the stove. I was in the nearby room listening to them figure out how to set it. They were making me laugh because with their bickering about how to set the appliance, they sounded like an old married couple, lol. In the other picture, the 2 of them are fastening a chain and rope to the tractor. The rope is tied to a pecan tree that had to be removed. I wish I could show you the video of Mars running as fast as he could when the tree was being pulled, lol. And that water tank next to the tractor -Marcelino helped us bring it here from Gilroy on his truck. There were other things he helped us with around here. We appreciated it very much.
I’m still in disbelief that he is no longer here. I won’t be seeing his gold car or white truck pulling into our driveway, anymore. Or his tall silhouette leaning against his car in the sunset as he and Manuel are still talking about stuff. Nor will I see his smile surrounded by that signature moustache that covered the lower part of his face. Our heart-felt condolences and prayers go out to all of Marcelino’s family. On that Tuesday afternoon, when I received news that he had passed away, I pictured him riding into the Heavens on his motorcycle, and then being greeted at the Gates by his Mom and Dad.
Rejoice with your loved ones, our friend.
Sincerely, Tina and Manuel
