Catherine Clare Nyland, 92, a lifelong resident of Hollister passed away of natural causes in her home surrounded by family on September 15, 2021. She is preceded in death by her sisters Mary Alice Tanner, Helen McNight and Barbara Todd, her daughter-in-law Helen Vassalo Nyland and her loving husband of 63 years, Peter Nyland. Clare is survived by her five children, son, Peter (Chuck) Nyland Jr., daughter Nancy (Rowen) Tupuivao, daughter Barbara (Earl) Boyd, daughter Monica (Jim) LePiane, and daughter Paula Nyland; eleven grandchildren Patrick Nyland, Elizabeth Quick, Todd and Leah Tupuivao; Cory and Lauren Boyd, Colleen Perea, Erin Ayhens, Travis LePiane, Summer Chance and Briana Bushkin; and eleven great-grandchildren Brodie Aispuro, Jack Nyland, Clare Quick, AJ, Marley and Luke Tupuivao, Lily Jo Tobin, Connor LePiane, Aaron Morgan, Shiloh Ayhens and Jagger Bushkin. She worked as a telephone operator in the late 1940’s until she and Peter were married on August 6, 1950. In the mid 1970’s Clare started working as a seamstress first at Shipper’s men’s clothing store then at Dick Bruhn’s tailoring men’s clothing for almost 30 years. She stayed busy with five children. She always volunteered to take us to 4-H camp, and never missed a school field trip. She made numerous costumes for her four girls dance recitals year after year, never missed a baseball game, or a dance class. Clare was an active member of YLI for as long as we can remember. Clare was sweet, kind and well liked by anyone that was lucky enough to have known her. She will be dearly missed. The family plans on having a mass and a “celebration of Clare’s life” in the near future. Date to be determined.
