Ray was a true and proud American. A decorated veteran of the 10 Regiment of the 5th Infantry Division during WWII. When Ray was wounded in November 1944 near Metz, France he was presented his Purple Heart by General Patton himself. Ray told me the story about being in a field hospital after being wounded and Patton came through presenting purple hearts to those that had been wounded in combat. He asked Ray where he was from and he told him "San Juan Bautista General". Patton got really happy because he was from California himself. You were always a solid and straight forward Man and I respected you for that. You and Louisa were such great neighbors and friends to my Parents. I will always be thankful for that. Be at peace MSG Velasco, your home now.

Isabel and Family-
I am so sorry to read about the death of your Mother and now your father. So very sad. Do you remember the time that I took you on a date to a Palma dance. Back then no cell phones...only phone booths. She gave you some quarters in case you weren't having a good time, so that you could call her and she would come get you. Such a character!
I live in Monterey now - come visit.

Raymond was a gentle man and a gentleman. He was a patriot and loved this Country. I had the pleasure of talking to him on several occasions and hearing him talk about his early life in San Juan and his war experiences, for that I am very grateful. He was a dear friend and his impression on me is a lasting one. My sincere condolences to his children and grandchildren and his brother Richard.

Raymond Velasco was a treasure. He was so clearly observant even as a child and his memory for people, places and events was remarkable. In his own quiet way, he shared many of his experiences with me at San Juan Bautista Historical Society meetings. I will miss him.
