I had the opportunity to get to know Bernie during my time working at Cal-Agra. Admittedly, it took awhile for him and others to warm up to the first ever receptionist, but I won him over with good coffee and sweets. We developed a friendship over the years and he gave me a lot of good advice. I’m grateful for the time I was able to spend with him.

Bernie is a huge part of most of my memories growing up involving my grandparents. There was rarely Al without Bernie, or Lorraine without Corinne. Bernie and Al, to this day, still hold the record for biggest mackinaw caught at Donner Lake. I think of Bernie sitting in a chair, fingers clasped in front of his belly, snoring and then being woken up and acting like he’d never been sleeping in the first place.
My condolences to Donna, Diane, Dave & Renee. I am so sorry. (I stole this photo from the slideshow, but it’s my favorite)

I was Bernie's "Spray Man" for several years, he was growing apples, cherries, walnuts, apricots, pears, and a plum or two, often all in the same block. This made the selection of spray materials interesting, because few things were registered for all the crops in a block. I was supposed to be the expert, but I learned more from Bernie than I have from anyone else. He was a very shrewd observer, and a very kind man, even though he would sometimes show the kindness using 4 letter words. There is not a day that passes that I don't call on some bit of insight I originally heard from Bernie. My two favorites, that may apply to just about anything in life are, " keep your powder dry", and "save your bombs", think about those for a moment..... I miss you Bernie

Condolences to the Freitas family. Enjoyed our many conversations when he would come to Cal-Agra. Such a sweet man - always gave us a "bad" time but with his great smile. RIP - Jeff & DeDe Valenzuela

RIP Bernie! I got to know him well hanging out in his cousin’s back yard. He came to Bob’s every afternoon to take a nap. He had some great stories of the early days of the Freitas family and the San Juan Valley!! I hope he’s in the middle of a big huge apple orchard with that great smile on his face!
