Shirley Avery, 89, passed away on November 27, 2025 in Hollister, CA, after a long
illness. Shirley was born in Bath, Illinois, to James Nall and Della Keefer on November
24, 1936, the second oldest of four children.
Shirley met and married Howard (Sonny) Miller in 1954 in Bath, Illinois. Together they
raised four children, Debra, Vicky, Greg, and Todd. They moved to California in 1973 to
be closer to Shirley’s mother and siblings. There, they celebrated 25 years of marriage
before Sonny’s passing in 1979.
While bowling on a league in Salinas, CA, Shirley met and later married David Avery.
Shirley and David managed Keefer’s Inn in King City for several years until retiring and
moving to Sun Lakes, AZ in 2001. While living in Arizona, Shirley was happy to
reconnect and share many adventures with her lifelong friend from Illinois, Betty Kay
Vaughn. Shirley and David were constant companions for 34 years until David’s
passing in 2015. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and
friend.
Shirley is survived by her children, Debbie Loos (Ed), Vicky Wilson (Marty), and Todd
Miller, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and
nephews. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Jim Nall and Della Keefer,
husbands, Howard (Sonny) Miller and David Avery, her son, Greg Miller, and her
siblings, Wilby Nall, Barbara Scaggs, and Jimmie Nall.
Per her wishes, no services will be held.
