Alfred J Bonturi Obituary

Alfred J. Bonturi passed away on October 8, 2025, in Hollister, CA.


Al was born to Fautso and Amelia Bonturi on August 16, 1925. He was raised in Hollister,

went school in Hollister and graduated from San Benito High School.


While in high school, he received the FFA Project Trophy in 1942, and was California

State Yell Leader Officer from 1941 - 1943.


Al took over the family orchards at the age of 14, after the death of his father. The

family farm grew apricots, table grapes, prunes, and walnuts. Gradually, the family

phased out the grapes and prunes, focusing on the more economically viable apricot

and walnut trees.


He was a key influence in the agricultural industry in San Benito County. He worked

with the Farm Bureau and UC Davis on the development of walnut varieties. He was a

member of the Federal Walnut Marketing Board for 20 years. Al was the president of San

Benito County Farm Bureau from 1957-1959.


He was a member of the Hollister Elks Lodge, Exchange Club, Ducks Unlimited, California

Waterfowl Association and founder of Scarpum Cementum,


He was a past Exalted Ruler for the Elks, and was Elk of the Month and Elk of the Year

several times, and received the most Inspirational Award for 20 years with the Elks.


Al was proud of his achievements; Some of Al's achievements were, he was a member

of the Board of Directors for California Canners and Growers. He received the California

Walnuts Industry Leadership Award, Sales Rep of the Year from Sierra Gold Nurseries,

Farm Bureau Agriculturalist of the year in 2010, Farm Bureau Distinguished Service

Award, in 2019, and Gavilan College Community Spirit Award in 2020.


He was an avid duck hunter and fisherman. Al holds the record for the largest

Mackinaw caught in Donner Lake, in 2000 at 34 pounds.


He was preceded by his parents, wife Corinne and his siblings. He leaves behind his son

Gregg Bonturi (Janice) along with family and numerous friends, Al will be deeply missed.


Private cremation will be followed by private inurnment.
