Obituary of Marie A. Lopes

Marie Lopes passed away at her Hollister residence on July 25, 2016, at the age of 101. She was born and raised in Hollister by her parents, Joseph and Maria Soares Cardoza. Marie married her husband, John Lopes, in 1935 and they were married for 53 years when he passed away in 1988. John and Marie bought a ranch on Freitas Road in 1953, sold it in 1974 and moved back into Hollister. Marie had previously worked at the local cannery as well as Cornet’s Variety Store but mostly, she was a homemaker for most of her life, raising her 2 sons, John and Philip. Marie was an active member of Sacred Heart Church, U.P.P.E.C., S.E.S., St. Anthony’s and was also was a former president of the P.T.A. while her children were in school. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and sewing and was well known for her persimmon and apricot cookies. “People looked forward to the hospitality she offered at her home”, said her family. Marie is survived by her sons, John Anthony Lopes (Linda) of Hollister and Philip Lopes (Patty) of San Dimas; Grandchildren Denise Lopes, Christopher Lopes, Patricia Lopes and Jonice Lopes; Great-Grandchildren Nathaniel Lopes, Andrew Lopes and Olivia Lopes; Niece Geraldine Cortes (Joe) of Seaside; as well as numerous relatives. She was predeceased by her husband John Lopes; Brother Joe Cardoza and Sister Olivia Johanson. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice c/o the mortuary or a mass may be said in her honor. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 28, 2016, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Sacred Heart Church on Friday, July 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
